Capitol Reef

14 Jan 2010 | 2 comments »

The pic to the left is near the park entrance to Capitol Reef National Park. That spot is touted as having the cleanest air in America. A couple of hours later we were back in Salt Lake which has had the dirtiest air in America the last couple of days due to a huge inversion which has trapped freezing air and smog in the valley. We might be getting a little snow tonight which should help clear the air out with the changing weather. We’ll see. Anyway, Capitol Reef was awesome. It’s still on our list for more extensive future exploration.

Bryce

Megan and I finally had a weekend off together so we spent it down at Bryce Canyon National Park. We drove down early Saturday morning and spent the afternoon cross-country skiing to the canyon and then around part of the rim. It was great. The next day we got up early again and drove to Bryce Point to watch the sun rise and light up the canyon. We then hiked down into it along Queen’s Garden trail and up the Navajo trail passing through ‘The Wall’. Megan wanted to see some petroglyphs so we drove over to Capitol Reef National Park for a quick trip and then headed back to Salt Lake for The Man to stick it to us for another week. More pics to follow.

Happy New Year

01 Jan 2010 | 6 comments »

Well, Megan and I are ready for the new year. My schedule has been pretty front-loaded, with 4 ward months and 1 ICU month in the first 6 months. Only 4 more thirty-hour shifts for the whole rest of intern year (Not counting the one I’m about to do in the morning). I still haven’t been downhill skiing this year, but hopefully that will change soon. We’ve got about a total of a foot of snow on the ground around the house, and tons more up in the mountains. I have my first weekend off in 3 months (next week) and I think some skiing is in my future. At left is my birthday present from Megan. He still needs a name.

Happy Holidays

Megan and I have been ridiculously busy the last 2 weeks with work and other things. Her family was out here for a week for an early Christmas which was fun. I also took up cross country skiing. I never thought I would do it again after going on trips with my dad back in the day. It was not the most enjoyable thing… falling every 30 seconds got old really quick. I took Megan out to Mountain Dell Nordic park to get her on cross country skis for the first time. Groomed trails are a lot of fun. Megan also got the xmas tree decorated. Here is one of her new ornaments.

Where is all the snow?

04 Dec 2009 | 4 comments »

We’ve had very little snowfall out here this winter which has been a bit disappointing. Steph came out to visit last week and Megan and her hit up the slopes for some skiing. It sounded like it was fun. We are supposed to be getting some more snow on Saturday and then the days following. Maybe I’ll finally get up to the mountains for some skiing.

In the meantime there is enough snow in the mountains to start doing a little snowshoeing. Steph and another friend of mine hit up Lamb’s Canyon for a snowshoeing trek up to Mt. Aire. We didn’t make it to the top of the mountain, but we found a better looking one nearby and decided to climb to the top of it. The pics at left are from that excursion. The sun set on us while we were still up near the top…

Megan and I went on another snowshoeing expedition this week with one of my friends with the goal being Mt. Aire again. We were going to hit it from Mill Creek Canyon, which is on the other side of the mountain. We fell short again. My friend’s dog came with us and ended up getting a cut on her foot which ended our trip when we were near the top. We’ll make it for sure the next time. We’ll just wait for more snow.

Grandeur Peak

Megan’s friend Lindsay came to visit a week or two ago and we made the trek up Grandeur Peak. This is probably one of my favorite hikes now. Not too hard, with some good views. The shot at left is of the Oquirrh Mountains, which make up the west edge of the Salt Lake Valley. The circle is from some plane that was doing figure 8s. More pics from Grandeur to come in the following days.

Zoo Kids

23 Oct 2009 | 3 comments »

Megan and I have been working quite a bit these last couple weeks. I’m nearly 2 weeks through with a grueling 12 week stint of general medicine wards. It’s fun, and probably what I will end up doing in the future, but as an intern it’s ~80 hours a week of non-stop stuff.

Matthew, Kelsey and my mom made the trek out to SLC last weekend for a brief stay. Kelsey went back to OR at the end of the weekend, but Matthew and mom went out to Denver to see what’s going on out there. While they were here we went to The Dodo for a birthday dinner and then to Red Iguana the next night for some superb mexican.

Also made a trip to the zoo. Which is extremely far from our house… about 6 blocks. The zoo babies were all over. There were 3 tiger cubs running all over their enclosure. The pic at left is through the fence and a branch and somehow still caught the scene. The 2nd pic is of Zuri, a 2 month old African elephant. There are some others that I might stick in a gallery on some future date, but looking through this blog, there seem to be a lot of empty promises…

Sun setting on Fall

15 Oct 2009 | 1 comment »

The fall leaves are gradually making their way down the foothills. The colors are at their peak right up to the base of the foothills near the university. I expect the whole of the sugarhouse, yalecrest and avenues areas to all turn yellow/red within the next 10 days. That should look pretty cool from up in the hills. Next day off will be Sunday and there will be a couple Hughsons in town. Perhaps the leaves will change while they are here? Pic at left is from our hike to Mt. Wire with the lake and Antelope Island in the background.

Nebo

12 Oct 2009 | 1 comment »

Dave and Cheryl came to visit us this weekend on their way to Jackson Hole. Today we hit the road south in search of changing leaves. I had heard about the Mt. Nebo wilderness area south of Provo and that the leaves there were excellent in the fall. So we made the 1+ hour drive to Nephi, UT. Once there we headed into the Mt. Nebo area driving back north. Along the way we hit up the Devil’s Kitchen, also known as the ‘Mini Bryce Canyon’. See the pic here. It was kinda cool. Not as sweet as the real deal, but still worth a pic.

We then continued up the drive and found ourselves at the Mt. Nebo overlook. Nebo is the tallest mountain in the Wasatch Range at 11,928 feet. Mt. Hood is 11,249 for those of you keeping score at home. The highest peak in Utah is King’s Peak at 13,528. Next summer Megan and I will climb Nebo and King’s… hopefully. Nebo is at left with Megan taking a shot of it. It is much more impressive from further away, but the representation here will have to do.

So we kept driving north and the last 2-3 miles out of the canyon as you exit towards Payson, UT we found the leaves. They were fairly non-existent in the southern parts of Nebo, but as you can see they were pretty awesome on the north end.

My mom, brother and sister will be here in 4 days. I imagine more fall colors will be added to this site before the week is out.

Mount Wire

08 Oct 2009 | no comments »

Here is another pic from the Mt. Wire hike. I was able to get a few pretty good shots with the sunset glow. It’ll give me some more pics to add to random posts over the next 3 months. I’m on back-to-back-to-back hospital ward month rotations, which will be grueling. But, I’m 1/3 of the way through intern year!
